Rolex Officially Unveils New Submariner No-Date 124060, Successor to the 114060

Rolex has officially launched the highly anticipated new Submariner undated reference 124060, replacing its predecessor reference 114060.

Remember, Rolex is about evolution, not revolution. In traditional Rolex fashion, Rolex has updated and improved the Submariner no-date, but the brand has stayed true to its design.

The biggest change of Submariner no-date is the replacement of a new generation 3230 movement. In addition to this, Rolex also increased the diameter of this watch to 40 to 41 mm. But at the same time, the lugs have become slimmer and not as bulky as their predecessors. That being said, it's likely to see about the same wear and tear as its predecessor, despite its increased size.

Otherwise, the Submariner 124060 feels and looks very similar to its predecessor, both in terms of style and design.

The update to the Rolex Submariner “No Date” 114060 (predecessor) comes as no surprise. Released in 2012, it is still powered by Rolex’s previous generation caliber 3130 movement, while many watches in the brand’s collection have been updated with the latest generation 31XX movements. Having said that, it's only a matter of time.

Looking closely at the watch, even a well-trained eye may have difficulty spotting the differences between the two watches on a whim. The visual changes are small, but important. But most important is the motivation that drives the movement.

What most people are surprised about the new 124060 is that it now comes with a 41mm case. This has divided opinion considering Rolex has never made a Submariner larger than 40mm, which is also considered the classic Submariner size. On paper, this means you might think it's bigger than its predecessor, but that's not the case. While we don’t have the exact diameter of this watch yet, the Submariner is likely only about 0.5 mm larger in size, as are other Rolex watches.

But the biggest impact on how the watch wears is its lugs, which are now slimmer and more refined compared to the chunky lugs on the 114060. Having said that, this watch wears very similarly to the 114060, although on paper, it looks larger. In addition to this, Rolex has given the watch a wider bracelet, now 21 mm instead of 20 mm, for better proportions and wear resistance.

Since it takes a trained eye to spot the change in lug design, the best way to identify the new 124060 from the 114060 is to look at the bottom of the dial at 6 o'clock. On the new Submariner, we find “Swiss Made” printed with a Rolex crown between the two words. On the predecessor, there is no printed Rolex crown. This symbolizes a new generation of movements and is therefore a quick way to distinguish them.

Otherwise, the Submariner 124060 has all the design features we love. It features a unidirectional rotating bezel with ceramic insert, 300 meters of water resistance, a polished ceramic dial and large applied hour-markers in white gold filled with Chromalight. The same goes for the hands and the iconic Mercedes hour hand. The watch comes on a satin-brushed Oyster bracelet and features the Rolex Glidelock extension system, a very useful feature.

It retains the classic look and iconic design, but is refined and refined in traditional Rolex fashion.
