Q9128981) brings the same sporty elegance to a more compact footprint, making it an ideal choice for those with smaller wrists or a preference for understated proportions.

Design and Dial Details

The 40mm model features the beloved lacquered blue gradient dial, transitioning from a deep navy at the edges to a lighter azure in the center. The layout has been subtly refined: the Jaeger-LeCoultre logo now sits in the middle section of the dial, rather than directly beneath the 12 o'clock Arabic numeral. Additionally, the word 'Automatique' has been removed, leaving only 'Swiss Made' at the bottom, for a cleaner aesthetic.

The case, while smaller in diameter, is also thinner – measuring 12.9mm compared to 13.92mm on the 42mm version. This reduction enhances comfort and makes the watch slide easily under a shirt cuff, without compromising its dive-watch credentials.

Movement and Functionality

Powering the watch is Jaeger-LeCoultre's in-house caliber 899, a workhorse known for its reliability. It beats at a steady 4Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and offers a robust 70-hour power reserve. The movement drives the time and date functions, which are adjusted via the crown at 2 o'clock. A second crown at 4 o'clock operates the internal rotating dive bezel, a signature feature of the Polaris line that adds a layer of vintage-inspired charm.

Finishing and Critique

As expected from the 'watchmaker's watchmaker', the movement is adorned with traditional Geneva stripes and perlage, showcasing meticulous hand-finishing. However, when you turn the watch over, the sapphire caseback reveals noticeable gaps between the circular movement bridge and the case perimeter – a detail that may give pause at the ,400 price point. While the movement itself is superb, the empty space suggests a missed opportunity for a custom-fit rotor or a larger movement to fill the case.

Despite this minor aesthetic quibble, the Polaris Date 40mm is a welcome addition to the collection, offering a more accessible size without sacrificing the character that makes the Polaris so appealing.
