The Long Road to a White Gold Daytona

Choosing Between 116500 and 126500

I did extensive research on the 116500 and the newer 126500. In terms of pure aesthetics, I concluded that for the black dial, the newer 126500 looks better, but for the white dial, the older 116500 is more appealing. I finally settled on a white dial 116500 from the last production batch, with a December 2023 card.

On the Wrist: Performance and Comfort

After wearing it for a few days, timekeeping remains excellent, averaging about one second slow per day. Here's my honest take—feel free to disagree:

Comfort: The five-link Jubilee bracelet on the Pepsi is the most comfortable, followed by the Panda Daytona and the Oyster bracelet on the blue-black, with the Deepsea being the least comfortable. Even as someone who prides himself on bench-pressing 100 kg, wearing the Deepsea all day really tires my wrist.
Finishing and Visual Appeal: When it comes to the tactile quality and beauty up close, the Deepsea's gradient dial is stunning, followed by the Pepsi, then the Panda, and finally the blue-black.
Recognition and Hype: The Panda Daytona is in a league of its own—unmatched in terms of recognition and buzz.

Is the Panda Daytona Worth the Hype?

The Daytona's status as a cultural icon is undeniable. Its design is timeless, and the white-on-black contrast is both sporty and elegant. If you're considering a steel chronograph from Rolex, the Panda is the definitive choice for those who value presence and legacy. However, be prepared for the premium—both in retail scarcity and aftermarket prices.

Buying Tips for Aspiring Owners

If you prefer a cleaner, more modern look, the 126500 black dial is the way to go.
For a classic, high-contrast look, the 116500 white dial remains the most coveted.
Always verify authenticity and papers, especially when buying from the grey market.
